I was asked a question today about Life Insurance. A sincere question. “Could insurance companies assert an “Act of God” to avoid Life Insurance payments due to The COVID-19 pandemic?” I sat for a second and blinked. This was a new one. I’d never been asked this question before. “No. No, that’s not how Life Insurance works,” I replied and then explained.
So, since I’ve already been asked once, I thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and start a conversation about Life Insurance during this time of great risk because Life Insurance IS a vital tool to help you prepare for your family’s financial future. And it is very important that you know what to expect and understand what all the provisions in your policies mean.
Let’s start with my answer to my friend’s question first. The answer is, “No, that’s not how Life Insurance works.” And here’s why. Life Insurance, unlike Home and Auto insurance, generally is not linked to or restricted by named perils like wind, rain, or hail. Now, there are some policies -- like Accidental Death and Dismemberment policies -- that require a death be an accident before it potentially pays a benefit. But Term Life and Whole Life generally do not have any such restrictions. What they do have is a two year period in which the insurer can deny payment due to a material misrepresentation in the application. So, so long as you were honest on your Life Application and you were issued a policy, it’s unlikely your payment would be declined by the insurance company.
The company you are buying your policy from is very important. Farmers is an established and reputable company with a long history of weathering the storms. Our company has deep reserves to make sure that we can handle and meet every claim that comes to us, even during a time of national crisis like this one. In fact, this is why I chose to become a Farmers Agent: Our company stands behind every policy. In the 18 years I have been an Agent with Farmers, I have delivered a lot of very helpful life-changing payments to people during some of the worst moments of their lives.
