Question - I'm shopping for a new car, what should I do?
Answer - If you're shopping or buying, make sure you have automobile insurance before you can test drive a vehicle because some dealerships may ask for it. Call your agent to make sure you have evidence of insurance for the coverage you currently have to bring with you. For example, CarMax, asks all test-drivers to have proof of insurance!
Question - How quickly do I have to get a new insurance policy when I purchase a new car?
Answer - In the state of Texas new vehicle owners have 30 days before they are required to have a new auto policy. In those 30 days, you are covered with the policy of your previous vehicle.
Question - What is full coverage?
This is a question I get all the time and it is hard to answer. In Texas, like most states, liability coverage is required but it does not protect you in every situation. Depending on your individual needs and how you acquired your vehicle adding comprehensive and collision coverage might be best to ensure you have the right protection.
Comprehensive Coverage - will cover damage to your car brought about by things besides a collision. This can include damage from hail, wind, theft, fire, vandalism, animal damage, and more.
Collision Coverage - pays to repair or replace your own vehicle when you are at fault. This also covers collisions with other vehicles, objects, and animals.
