I have a long history with the March of Dimes. All the way back to 1955. That was the year that the Polio Vaccine, for which the research was funded by March of Dimes, was released for limited distribution. The town that I lived in only had enough to give to the children entering first grade. And about a month before I would have received it, I contracted Polio. I was in a rehabilitation hospital for 9 months and had to wear leg braces for many years. Physical rehab was a part of my life for a long time. I am living proof of what could have happened to many, many children if March of Dimes had not been around. Many would not have survived. I am so grateful for the Polio Vaccine so that no one has to endure what I did and do each day. After March of Dimes succeeded in what they set out to do, they could have shut their doors - mission accomplished! But, they turned their sites on preventing birth defects and I was tied to their mission even more. When the rise of premature births came to the forefront, March of Dimes began research on causes and treatments for preemie babies. I was adopted and recently found out I had a twin sister who was stillborn and that ours was likely a premature birth. I guess you can call this the trifecta of March of Dimes - Polio, birth defect and prematurity. If anyone ever wonders why I have a passion for March of Dimes, this should answer them. Please give so they can continue their research. The prematurity rate is coming down, but there is still a long way to go. To make a donation click the link below. Thank you for your generosity. The mission of March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
