Fall Home Checklist – Prepare for Winter
• Schedule a chimney cleaning and heating system maintenance
o Make sure your chimney you use for your fireplace is cleaned and ready for this year’s wood burning. Chimney fires account for 125 million dollars in losses each year from an estimated 25,000 chimney fires across our nation
o Don’t wait for the snow to find out your heating system needs updated, filter needs changed, or worse, your heating system is sending our carbon monoxide into your home. Have it checked, It’s worth the expense.
• Clean gutters and downspouts.
o Remember in the Spring when you said you would clean your gutters out this summer when its warm? Well you didn’t and went to the beach instead. Get those gutters cleaned before the snow flies, the water and leaves and dirt freeze, and you get a backup into your roof and down your walls.
• Seal gaps in your windows and doors where the cold air will remove heat and raise your gas/electric bills. Also, seal up those small places where animals such as mice and moles can come in and stay warm in your house for the winter.
• Stock up on winter supplies
o Need a new snow shovel(s)? Did you arrange for plowing if needed? Do you have salt ready to lay down on your drive and walks following a freezing rain? Did you get good winter gloves and a hat to replace the worn out ones from two years ago you are still using??? You get the picture.
• Shut off exterior faucets and store hoses when you are ready, and before the snow flies.
• Clean dryer vents
o It’s an easy task and takes just a few minutes. Your clothes dry faster, and better yet, your house won’t catch on fire!
